According to health officials in Maryland, asbestos exposure has shut down section of the Maycrest Shopping Center.

Workers have been ordered to stop working due to the potential risk of asbestos exposure.

The shopping center, which was built in the 1950’s, is currently undergoing renovations by its new owner.

The Director of Inspectional Services for the county, David Mackley, claims that this is the second time authorities have ordered interior renovation work at the center to stop due to asbestosproblems.

Tiles Being Removed

A state inspector reportedly called in health authorities after finding that work had preceded in an area of the mall where asbestos was found.

“The new owner was up there removing carpeting a little over a month ago,” explains Mackley, “and some of the floor tile came up with the carpeting.”

Concerned Workers Seek Medical Attention

Several workers employed at the Maycrest stores have sought medical attention due to asbestos concerns.

“At one point during the renovations, everyone in our office felt sick,” says Heather Cheney, a secretary at one of the Maycrest offices. “We thought it was a flu bug.”
