Massey Energy Co. Agrees to Workplace Improvements

According to recent reports, Massey Energy Company has reached a settlement with Manville Personal Injury Settlement Trust involving the safety of their workplace.


The settlement reportedly resolves personal injury claims that resulted from exposure to asbestos-related products


Company Forced Make Changes


As a result of the charges brought against them, Massey Energy Co. has been forced to make significant changes and improvement in regards to worker safety.


Among the changes promised are:


• Creation of new corporate vice presidents for Best Environmental Practices
• Implementation of annual “Corporate Social Responsibility Report” to shareholders
• Additional measure to improve monitoring


Suit Filed Against Manville Trust


The Manville Trust filed the case in 2007 against CEO Don Blankenship and other officers and directors for the safety hazards and asbestos exposure workers were at risk for.


“The reforms outlined in the settlement will help ensure that the company’s practices conform to applicable legal requirements and also will promote a safe working environment for Massey Energy Employees,” says Ann Ritter, who played a crucial role in negotiating the settlement.
