Mesothelioma Clinical Trials

Friday, January 19th, 2007

The usual standard mesothelioma treatments have not proven to be very effective, which is why patients with mesothelioma should seriously consider participating in a clinical trial. These trials are conducted by hospitals affiliated with universities to help develop treatments, and possibly even a cure for mesothelioma.

Why should I participate in a clinical trial?

  • You may have nothing to lose. Mesothelioma diagnoses are usually accompanied by pretty grim prognoses. Since standard treatments can accomplish little in the later stages of mesothelioma, a clinical trial may offer you the greatest chance of living longer.
  • Part of your treatment may be paid for by the hospital or sponsoring organization. This can decrease the significant financial strain mesothelioma treatment can put on you and your family.
  • You will be more informed about your condition. You will be surrounded by physicians who are experts on mesothelioma and will monitor your illness closely.
  • You will have the satisfaction of helping humanity. You can contribute to ongoing efforts to help future mesothelioma patients live longer, less painful lives.

Why Shouldn’t I participate in a clinical trial?

  • Even though the physicians and medical staff conducting the trial will go to great lengths to ensure that you remain as safe as possible, there are inherent risks to testing new treatments. You are under careful supervision throughout the trial, so chances are you will be kept relatively safe. Discuss the risks with your doctor before deciding to participate in a clinical trial.

What Should I Ask My Doctor?

Before you agree to participate in a clinical trial, you may wish to ask a physician the following questions:

  • What are the chances of my mesothelioma being successfully treated with standard treatments?
  • Will my participation in this trial keep me from seeking other treatment?
  • What are the expected results of the trial?
  • What does this trial hope to accomplish?
  • What side effects may occur? Are they any worse than the ones I will experience with standard treatment?
  • Who is sponsoring the trial?
  • How much will this treatment cost me, if anything?
