A settlement was recently reached in San Francisco in the asbestos lawsuit filed by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
The suit was filed against a management company for allegedly failing to properly remove asbestos from several of their properties.
Air District Files Asbestos Related Suit
The Air District filed the suit claiming that the property company knowingly failed to hire a certified asbestos contractor to remove asbestos.
Various properties owned by the company allegedly contained asbestos in their ceilings and the substance needed to be removed.
Company Accused of Illegal Removal
According to the Air District the company hired uncertified contractors to remove the asbestos instead of complying with the asbestos-handling regulations.
As a result of the property manager’s negligence, residents at the apartments were reportedly exposed to asbestos.
“Landlords need to know that if they have asbestos in the building, they must follow the rules that are in place to ensure the protection of public health,” explained Jack Broadbent, the Air District Executive Officer. “If they don’t they are going to have to pay a penalty.”
