A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
"Mesothelioma patients hope research to new treatment methods continues"
July 14, 2004
Mesothelioma is commonly mistaken for other illnesses, mainly because the disease is so newly publicized that there is a lack of general information. The most common mesothelioma treatments are surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. Since some estimates have projected new mesothelioma cases will be minimal after the next 30 years, concern is that mesothelioma research will not reveal alternate forms of therapy.
A new mesothelioma treatment called photodynamic therapy allows the use of light to kill cancer cells in a less invasive method than other mesothelioma treatments. A drug is intravenously administered to allow the cancerous cells to be more sensitive and then a special frequency of laser beams are directed towards the mesothelioma cancer once the cells have been exposed to the drug for the appropriate amount of time. The photodynamic mesothelioma treatment is one more option for patients suffering from the asbestos linked disease.
