A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
According to asbestos testing reports, the North Shore Mining Company in Silver Creek, MN is working to obtain court permission to override a legislation that dictates the levels of asbestos that can be emitted in the area.
The Minnesota Appellate Court is currently debating whether or not to permit the company to emit more asbestos into the air.
Emissions Legislation Questioned
The current emissions legislation reportedly says that the levels of asbestos that are omitted into the air must be lower or equal to the amount of asbestos already existent in the air.
If the court were to alter this legislation, it would allow them the freedom to emit as much asbestos into the air as they desire.
History of Asbestos in MN
In the 1970’s asbestos was banned by federal legislation due to its association with a fatal form of cancer known as mesothelioma.
The current Minnesota legislation regarding asbestos in Minnesota was passed in 1974.
Residents May be at Risk
Residents of Silver Creek could potentially be at risk if the court rules in favor of the mining company.
