EPA Questioned in Montana Asbestos Problem

Senator Max Baucus is accusing the U.S. Environmental Agency of not doing enough to clean up the asbestos infested town of Libby.

Baucus is demanding that the EPA expose documents explaining why the agency has yet to declare a public health emergency in the small town.

Health Problems in Libby

Within the past few years hundreds of residents in the town of Libby have died or become ill due to asbestos exposure from a nearby mine.

“It’s critical the people of Libby get justice,” explains Baucus, “there is an emergency here.”

A local resident and advocate of the cleanup, Clinton Maynard claims that because of the failed cleanup, the EPA has lost credibility.

Asbestos Exposure From Mine

According to reports, 1, 800 current and former residents have become sick from being exposed to asbestos.

Residents are said to be inhaling asbestos fibers that infest a local mine, which was closed in 1990.

Baucus and other officials claim that although the EPA has spent millions to clean up the town, people are still becoming sick and the agency have not done enough.

The U.S. Office of Inspector General stated that the EPA has failed to establish a cleanup target for the homes that have been contaminated by asbestos fibers.
