Mesothelioma: 12 Essential Facts

Asbestos Found in Helena-Area Homes

The Montana state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) recently confirmed that anthophyllite asbestos was found at homes in the Helena-area.

Reports claim the DEQ found asbestos in several commercial buildings and in the soil around the Bozeman and Livingston areas.

Asbestos From Mines

The DEQ thinks the asbestos came from the older mines that are nearby the affected areas, such as the Karst Mine.

Although anthophyllite asbestos is known as a less toxic form of the material, officials from the DEQ are still warning local residents to be aware and cautious of the problem.

Crews Discover Asbestos in Streets

The DEQ says they discovered the asbestos along the city streets and immediately assumed it was coming from the nearby landfills.

Officials say the carcinogen was used years ago as fill and is now blowing into the downtown Helena area.

Asbestos Abatement Needed

An asbestos abatement was reportedly conducted in the Bozeman area before and now city officials believe another abatement is needed.

“Asbestos Training” was also conducted in March to better educate local residents about asbestos and the risks lined to the substance.
