Debris from Navy Housing Project Questioned

The state of Virginia is currently conducting an investigation regarding asbestos from the construction site of a Navy housing project.
Health officials believe the asbestos may have been illegally removed from the construction site then dumped at a landfill in Suffolk.

Landfill Owner Questions Safety of Debris

John Holland, the owner of John C. Holland Enterprises Inc., a landfill in Suffolk, is having the debris brought from the Navy site tested for asbestos.

He has also requested that the debris be quarantined.

Although the state permits non-friable asbestos-contaminated material to be dumped at the landfill, Holland believes the asbestos brought from the housing project could become airborne.

Debris Tested for Asbestos

Holland reportedly contracted the Virginia Beach office of Environmental Quality to test the debris due to his suspicion that the asbestos was contaminated.

“We are waiting for a copy of the lab results,” says Bill Hayden, spokesman for the DEQ.

The results of the tests are reportedly supposed to be determined by next week, at which time Holland will decide what further action to take.
