North Ridge Asbestos Report Released

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

According to recent reports, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be releasing the asbestos report for the North Ridge Estates site near Klamath Falls.

The report will describe a variety of asbestos clean-up options for the property.

Site Once Used by Navy

In the 1940’s North Ridge was used by the U.S. Navy for Marine Barracks on land and asbestos was reportedly used to build all 80 of the buildings.

During the 1970’s the buildings were torn down and a residential area, the North Ridge Estates, were built.

Since the construction of the homes, the Department of Environmental Quality and the EPA have worked to remove the asbestos from the property.

Asbestos Revealed in Another Area

Earlier this week, crews working on the report discovered an area at North Ridge where the EPA had not yet observed asbestos.

Although there has already been some clean-up done on the property, officials claim that there is still a lot to be done.

“Cleaning up asbestos to protect the health of people, we’ll do one or two things. One is to fence off the contaminated area so people don’t come into contact with it, and the second is to contain the asbestos under a cap of clean soil,” explains Judy Smith, a Public Information Officer.

The report is expected to be released in September.
