A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
A recent study reportedly found that a 48-square mile area in California is infested with toxic asbestos.
As a result of the findings, the area has been closed off to the public to prevent the asbestos from being stirred up.
Clear Creek Closed
The Clear Creek Management Area has been a favorite hotspot to those living in Central California because of its deep canyons, wildflowers and rock formations.
The area reportedly registered an estimated 35,000 visits a year by off-roaders and nature enthusiasts, but has long been known as the largest deposit of asbestos in the U.S.
After more recent tests labeled the area a “death zone”, since five visits a year over three decades could lead to lung cancer and other crippling disease, the Bureau of Land Management decided to close the area.
Asbestos Found
The type of asbestos that was found in the region is known as Coalinga chrysotile, which is a short fiber type of asbestos that’s toxic.
The bureau has warned the public to stay away from the dangerous part of the area and avoid drinking water from the creek.
