Record Settlement Reached for Asbestos Violations
A settlement was recently reached in Wilmington, Ohio, in the case involving a hotel accused of violating the Ohio emission control standards.
The company is being forced to pay $227,700 for violations made at an Urban Resort property that was previously a Days Inn.
Asbestos Violation Accusations
RLR Investments, LLC, was responsible for renovating the Days Inn Hotel in 2003 and according to the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency (RAPCA) the company failed to properly notify authorities about the project.
The RAPCA claims they discovered many asbestos violations and immediately referred the case to Ohio EPA.
Suit Allegations
Among the violations named in the suit, are:
• Failure to notify Ohio EPA about the project
• Failure to inspect the premises for asbestos
• Failure to wet regulated asbestos materials during removal
“The asbestos regulations are intended to protect public health, which is why we take violations very seriously,” says Ohio EPA Director Chris Korleski. “We urge anyone involved in the building demolition or renovation to understand the asbestos requirements and follow them to the letter.”
If asbestos is inhaled it can lead to serious health complications including the development of fatal cancers such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.
