Olympic Stadium Work Halted due to Asbestos

According to reports, construction work on part of the foundations of the Olympic stadium in London has been put on hold due to asbestos concerns.

Asbestos has supposedly been found on the site where the 2012 Olympic stadium is set to be built.

Protecting Workers from Exposure

Work on a section of the stadium was stopped by officials as a cautionary measure to protect construction workers from asbestos exposure.

Asbestos is a cancer causing material that can be extremely harmful and even fatal to those who are exposed to it.

Earlier this week the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) reported that exposure to asbestos fibers can cause tumors and other serious illnesses.

Health Serves as a Priority

Although the construction delay is not expected to have any effect on the Olympic games, construction reportedly began three months earlier than planned, officials say the health of the workers is most important.

“The health and safety of the work force is our No. 1 priority,” states Lawrence Waterman, the head of health and safety at the ODA. “We are working with the relevant authorities and expect work to restart progressively as protective measures are put in place in the next few days.”
