A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
The asbestos removal from a Virginia high school is causing concern over asbestos in schools.
Asbestos is being removed from Menchville High School and many are concerned that the students and faculty are being exposed to the harmful carcinogen.
Asbestos Removal
The $6.2 million project that began in June and is expected to continue through 2008 is reportedly being done to update the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning in the school.
The project entails the removal of asbestos from the piping insulation that is in the ceiling of the building.
Parents Voice Concerns
School officials reportedly sent a letter to parents explaining that the asbestos removal is being done after school hours; however, parents are still skeptical and concerned about the potential harm the removal could have on their children.
Some parents claim that they have contacted the school for more information and have not received any further updates.
One parent says that she couldn’t get any answers from the assistant principal regarding the quality of the air that has been tested.
She says that she intends to have her child tested for asbestos exposure.
Another parent is considering transferring her daughter to another school, worried that she is being exposed to asbestos daily.
District Spokeswoman, Michelle Morgan Price, claims that if they continue to find asbestos in the air, they will consider shutting the school down for an extended period of time to ensure the students safety.
