PA Residents Urge Asbestos Problems to be Resolved

Residents of Courtright Avenue in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, are voicing their concerns regarding the condition of a nearby apartment complex.

The Murray complex burned down in a fire and now many fear the building is posing risks to their health.

Family Concerned for Safety

Frank Matello and Gerri Kinney live near the complex and say they, along with their 11-year-old son, have to walk over broken glass that is strews on the sidewalks outside the damaged property daily.

Kinney is particularly concerned that her son Garrett is being exposed to asbestos and fears it could cause severe health problems since he already suffers from asthma.

There is reportedly a sign outside the old building warning residents of the potential for asbestos exposure.

“There are rats running in and out of there, it’s disgusting” says Kinney. “My main concern is the asbestos.”

City Claims Building to be Demolished Soon

Since the fire, the Murray complex has reportedly received $2.5 million from the state and city officials claim the building will be demolished soon.

However, those living around the property claim they have been told this several times before but no action has been taken.

“It is a dangerous eyesore and it was a hazardous fire,” explains Matello. “You can’t tell me the asbestos was not disturbed.”
