Asbestos Found in Pennsylvania Elementary School

Plans to renovate the roof at Park Elementary School in Munhall, Pennsylvania have been put on hold after discovering that the existing tiles contain asbestos.

Michael Cherpak, Director of Operational Services for the district, announced that an asbestos abatement plan for the asbestos school will be put into affect before any renovations begin to ensure the safety of the students, teachers and families living in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Parents and Board Members Express Concern

According to reports, district officials failed to notify parents of the concern, even though they were fully aware of the asbestos contamination. Reportedly, district officials found out that the roof contained the toxic material Sept. 8, but chose not to announce it to the public.

Parents and members of the school board have expressed concern for the way Steel Valley District handled the situation. According to reports, Cherpak lied to reporters about his knowledge of the contamination in an interview Sept. 11.

Cherpak stated that there was some suspicion of asbestos contamination in the roof, but that school officials were still waiting for confirmation from tests that were being conducted — even though he already knew that the tests were positive. Cherpak admitted to lying to the reporters, because “not all of the school board members knew.”
