EPA’s Work on Asbestos Site Worries Residents
Plans to build a high-rise on the top of an asbestos waste pile in Philadelphia have surfaced once again despite protests from local residents.
It was just three years ago that a developer withdrew plans for construction and once again the building site is the focus of public controversy.
EPA Clears Land for Construction
Crews under contract with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have reportedly begun clearing the site and smoothing the land for work to being.
In the 1960’s a good portion of industrial fragments containing asbestos were discarded on the property.
Community Voices Concern
Some residents in the community are so outraged that construction would be done where there are known asbestos problems that they are willing to take action.
According to reports, some residents have threatened to directly challenge the EPA during a meeting that is supposed to take places regarding the building tomorrow.
“I believe the action is a hazard,” says Sharon McCormick, the cofounder of the BoRit Citizens Advisory Group, which gives the EPA feedback on matters regarding the construction site.
Many residents claim the EPA violated guidelines by not warning them of the impending work happening at the site.
They are now worried they have been put at risk for asbestos exposure and could endure future health complications in the future as a result.
