A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
According to reports, University High School in Philadelphia is going to stop accepting students to start a gradual phase out that will empty the school by 2010 due to asbestos in the school.
The phase-out is needed in order to start a renovation of the building, which is currently infested with asbestos.
Renovations Put on Hold
The high school was set to undergo renovations as part of the district’s $1.5 billion, five-year building plan.
However, concerns regarding the asbestos problem convinced school officials to delay the renovation until the campus is shut down.
The school’s faculty members and students have not been notified of the new plan for renovations and community meetings are being prepared to inform the public.
Community Grows Concerned
Reports claim that in addition to having asbestos problems, the buildings on the school’s campus pose other environmental problems, such as leaky ceilings.
“If they know asbestos is in here and we can die from it, what are we doing in the building?” asks Barbara Wilf Rose, a teacher who has been working at the school for over three years.
According to Rose, the asbestos problem is so bad that in one of the classrooms, a powdery substance can be seen floating around.
