Pipe Fitter Awarded One Million in Mesothelioma Suit

A Washington pipe fitter recently settled a case with the help of a California based law firm.

Additional compensation is still pending but reports claim the man has already been awarded more than one million.

The Lawsuit

The pipe fitter, 70, whose name has not been disclosed, worked at a pulp mill in Port Angeles, Washington from 1959 to 1992.

Soon after his retirement from the company, the man was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a fatal form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos.

Mesothelioma can often go undetectable until several years after the illness is contracted.

Exposure at Work

During the time of his employment, pipe fitters were often exposed to harmful substances like asbestos.

The pipes were covered with asbestos in order to contain the heat and to prevent workers from getting burned if they came into contact with the pipes.

Other companies are also currently under investigation for causing mesothelioma in pipe fitters.
