Approval for Asbestos Removal in Redlands

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

The city of Redlands recently approved funding for the removal of asbestos from Safety Hall.

Asbestos was reportedly found in the building during a construction project to ensure better safety in the case of an earthquake.

Asbestos Discovered in Building

According to reports, asbestos was found in the ceiling and floor tiles of Safety Hall, which serves as headquarters for the Police Department.

Asbestos is a known carcinogen that can cause fatal illnesses such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Those who are exposed to asbestos fibers often don’t begin to see symptoms until 20 to 40 years after the initial exposure.

City Takes Action for Community Safety

Although the cost of the construction could now rise with the removal of asbestos, the city has decided it best to take action to ensure safety.

“We have encountered some conditions out in the field that were unforeseen,” explains Rosemary Hoerning, Municipal Utilities and Engineering Director.

Members of the Police Department believe that the current conditions in the building are proving it to be an unsafe place for work.
