Rhode Island Widow Files Asbestos Suit

A widow living in Rhode Island recently filed a suit against 51 defendant companies for her late husband's exposure to asbestos at the workplace.

The woman blames her husband's former employers for his illness and early death.

Widow Takes Legal Action

Elaine Barton has filed the suit on behalf of Robert Barton who was employed with the U.S. Navy as a metallurgist and maintenance man at various companies.

He also worked as a carpenter, and installed drywall and floor tile in residential neighborhoods throughout the East Coast.

Barton claims that during his professional career, her husband was exposed to and inhaled asbestos, which eventually caused him to contract a fatal form of cancer known as mesothelioma.

“The defendants knew of or should have known of that the asbestos fibers contained in their products had a toxic, poisonous, and highly defective effect upon the health of people inhaling, ingesting, or otherwise absorbing them,” states the complaint.

Lawsuit Claims

Barton also claims that she has sought, but has been unable to obtain, documents having to do with her husband's employment and the use of products containing asbestos from the defendants.

The widow says she has been liable for all of her husband's funeral expenses and has been deprived of his support and companionship.

Malleable Iron Foundry is among the defendants named in the suit.
