A Mesothelioma and Asbestos Information and Treatment Center Resource
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry in San Francisco is aiding in the effort to help contain and limit asbestos-contaminated dust from a local Naval Shipyard asbestos site.
The agency has agreed to review the construction site, which could potentially lead to stronger pollution controlling at the former Navy shipyard.
Resident Complaints
For months residents living near the site have claimed that developers, Lennar Corp., are not taking the necessary steps to ensure their health is protected.
Residents have complained of nosebleeds, asthma attacks, and chest pains since Lennar Corp., began building 1,500 houses on the site.
Many of them have asked for tests to be conducted to determine whether they’re being exposed to an unhealthy amount of asbestos.
How Will the Agency Help?
According to city officials, the agency will investigate what is being done to ensure the residents safety.
They will test everything from the methods used to contain dust and measure the level of asbestos being released into the air.
“California has had a construction boom, and we are moving to areas that are previously natural. People are moving into areas of naturally occurring asbestos, which we know is toxic,” explains the spokeswoman for Air Resources Board, Gennet Paauwe.
