School Project Over Budget Due to Asbestos

According to reports, the need for asbestos removal at a construction project in Aspen has put the school over budget.

The project is reportedly now going to cost $1.3 million and the newly found asbestos will delay the demolition of the building.

Asbestos Removal Required

During a renovation project at Aspen Elementary School, crews discovered left over asbestos that was not removed decades ago.

According to Dave Detwiler, the project manager for the Aspen School District, the walls at the school are filled with asbestos.

Detwiler says the asbestos must be vacuumed out before the building can be demolished,

Project Turns Costly

In January, the company hired by the district to remove the asbestos, ESA Inc. said the asbestos should be removed by the beginning of the summer so construction can begin.

However, the removal has pushed the project $1.3 million over budget, so construction has been delayed.

As work proceeds on the removal, more and more asbestos has supposedly been found and the process is more complicated then the school district originally thought.
