Mesothelioma: 12 Essential Facts

Scientology Ship Remains on Lock Down

Six weeks after health officials impounded the Scientology cruise ship known as the “Freewinds,” the ship still remains on lock down.

Blue asbestos was found on the ship and experts are now saying that decontaminating the ship could cost millions of dollars.
Health officials are concerned that decontaminating the entire ship may not even be possible.

Ship Impounded Due to Asbestos Problems

In April, the ship was reportedly quarantined and contracted to be repaired and decontaminated.

However, the contamination of asbestos was supposedly so extensive that the removal and repair company thought it would cause too much risk to their workers and stopped operations.

Scientology Leaders Knew About Asbestos

According to reports, top leaders of the Scientology group were told about the dangerous levels of asbestos found on the ship in 1987.

Former Scientologist, Lawrence Woodcraft, who is a licensed architect, supervised the remodeling of the ship when the asbestos was originally found in the 1980’s.

Woodcraft claims he notified Scientology officials about the problems and the dangers blue asbestos poses when he was working on the ship.

In response, they reportedly told him that he should carry on with work and leave the asbestos since L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the cult, never mentioned that it was harmful.
