Shipyard Workers at Higher Risk for Mesothelioma

Researchers recently conducted a study regarding mesothelioma and the occupations that are most commonly linked to the illness.

The study is published in the current issue of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Study Conducted

The study was conducted on workers in a U.S. Coast Guard shipyard.

The researchers found that there was a higher mortality rate for shipyard workers in relation to mesothelioma and lung cancer then there is with the general population in America.

The study, which was conducted by four researchers, followed 4,702 civilian workers who were employed at the shipyard between January 1950 and December 1964.

The number of deaths and their causes were then measured through December of 2001.

In conclusion, the researchers discovered a large percentage of the workers from the shipyard were either suffering from or had already died from an asbestos related illness.

Preventing Mesothelioma

Since mesothelioma is primarly caused by exposure to asbestos, researchers and doctors both claim that avoiding risky occupations can prevent the illness.

Although asbestos can be found anywhere from homes, to public buildings and work offices, specific occupations such as working in a shipyard prove to make individuals most vulnerable.
