Mesothelioma: 12 Essential Facts

State Cites Company for Asbestos Exposure

The state of Maine has cited the developers of a city building for failing to obey with asbestos laws and regulations.

The former Worster House allegedly contained asbestos while residents were working and living in the building.

The citation has been issued to Hallowell House, LLC, a firm that works renovating older buildings.

The Allegations

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection inspected the Worster House after receiving complaints from residents claiming that asbestos fibers were filling the air.

The citation states that tenants were still living in the building when workers from Hallowell House began tearing out the walls and exposing them to construction dust without first checking for asbestos.

After the renovation began, asbestos was found in the flooring and throughout the basement of the building.

Reported Violations

The citation issued by the state claims that the company:

  • Failed to notify the department of the removal and existence of asbestos
  • Failed to use those with a license to remove asbestos
  • Failed to comply with all applicable work practice requirements while engaging in asbestos related activity
