Students at SUNY Concerned About Asbestos

Students and parents at the SUNY New Paltz School in New York are voicing their concern about the asbestos in the school’s buildings and dorms.

There are reportedly signs of caution warning students and faculty of asbestos throughout the campus on one dorm building, chutes descend from the roof going into the dumpster where asbestos is being removed.

Students claim that there is no covering or enclosure, the asbestos just falls into the dumpster and they fear it is being released into the air.

Students Told of Asbestos Problem

Residents in Crispell Hall received an email earlier this month from dorm director, Bobby Kavathas, alerting them of the asbestos removal that would be occurring on the third floor.

The email warning prohibited students from opening their windows at any time due to the risk of asbestos exposure.

However, students began opening their windows when a heat wave hit the campus a week later and many parents grew concerned about exposure.

“There is dust coming off the building. There are people on the roof doing removal and it is not contained. It’s definitely going into the atmosphere,” said Jenna Dern, a junior who lives on the first floor of the dorm.

Old Buildings More at Risk

The campus buildings date back to 1968 and house more than 1,000 students.

“The administration should be more transparent about what construction is going on and what is involved,” said Dern.
