Research Shows Most Schools in TN Contain Asbestos
According to recent reports, most schools in Tennessee, particularly Hamilton County, contain asbestos and lead.
Renovators working on the Normal Park Upper School discovered asbestos and lead while they were repainting the building.
Renovation Costs Increase
After the discovery of the harmful carcinogens, construction crews realized the $20,000 grant wasn’t going to be enough to cover the cost of the job.
Due to the fact that an asbestos removal now needs to take place, the cost of the renovation has reportedly more than doubled.
Asbestos Found in Older Buildings
According to researchers, the schools in Hamilton County aren’t the only ones facing asbestos problems.
More than half the schools in Tennessee most likely contain some amount of asbestos and lead.
“Generally, anything built prior to 1978 will have asbestos-containing materials,” explains Gary Waters, the associate superintendent of auxiliary service.
A spokesman for the EPA says that exposure to materials, such as asbestos, can cause serious health problems, particularly in children.
