Mesothelioma: 12 Essential Facts

Asbestos Removal Ordered at VA Demolition Site

An asbestos removal has been ordered at the former site of a hospital that is in the process of being demolished in Virginia.

According to reports, the site cannot continue to be torn down until all of the asbestos has been properly removed from the property.

Asbestos Found at Kings Mountain Hospital

After asbestos was found by work crews at what used to be Kings Mountain Hospital, the owner of the site, Cochran Enterprises Inc., told a judge that the asbestos removal will delay the demolition for at least a week.

E. Luke Greene Co., which is based out of Johnson City has been hired to remove the asbestos from the contaminated site.

Past Lawsuit Against City

In 2007, a lawsuit was filed against the city of Bristol seeking the demolition of the old hospital after an engineer reported that the hospital was a “danger to human life.”

Judge Larry B. Kirksey is now requesting another hearing for October and says he wants city officials to do a thorough inspection of the building and abatement before returning to court.

Risks Linked to Asbestos

Asbestos is a known carcinogen that has been linked to various fatal illnesses such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

This naturally occurring substance can cause severe health problems when inhaled, ingested or handled.
