W.R. Grace’s Appeal Rejected
Earlier today, the Supreme Court reportedly rejected an asbestos appeal made by W.R. Grace & Co.
A criminal case was brought against the company that claimed they released asbestos from a Montana mine.
Company Charged for Asbestos Exposure
In 2005, federal prosecutors charged W.R. Grace and six of its executives for allegedly violating the Clean Air Act.
Asbestos is reported to have been released from the vermiculite mine in Libby, MT.
Prosecutors claim the company released the substance knowing of the dangers of asbestos.
Former Employees and Residents Become Ill
The company was in operation from 1963 to 1990 and workers reportedly carried home asbestos on their clothing daily.
The asbestos is thought to have sickened an estimated 2,000 residents in Libby and caused 225 deaths.
In April, the company agreed to a settlement for $3 billion, which enabled them to get out of bankruptcy.
The executives now could potentially face jail time.
