Major General James Comstock AUS (Ret.)

Major General James W. Comstock, United States Army Reserve, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing from Michigan State University. As a Distinguished Military Graduate of his ROTC class he received a Regular Army commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry upon graduation in 1969. He earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security Studies from California State University, San Bernardino, California.
Major General Comstock's military education includes completion of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advance Courses, Basic Airborne Course, Ranger Course, Jungle Operations School, Special Forces Operations Course, Command and General Staff College, National Security Management Course, and the Army War College.
Major General Comstock served as US Central Command's Reserve Component Advisor/Deputy J3. He served as Commanding General of the 311th Corp Support Command (COSCOM). He also served in other key positions in the 311th COSCOM such as; Deputy Commanding General, Chief of Staff, Assistant Chief of Staff-Personnel, Assistant Chief of Staff-Plans, Assistant Chief of Staff-Materiel, and Assistant Chief of Staff-Security, Plans and Operations. Major General Comstock served as Battalion Commander of the 155th Supply & Services Battalion. At the 6222nd US Army Reserve School Major General Comstock served as the MOS Director, the Director of Enlisted Courses, and the Operations Officer. Prior to these assignments Major General Comstock served in a variety of positions with the 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces. Major General Comstock's initial USAR assignment was as a Company Commander, Co. C, 1st BN, 423rd Regiment 3rd BDE (AIT) 70th Division (TNG).
On Active Duty from July 1969 through November 1972 Major General Comstock served as a Platoon Leader with the 3rd BN (ABN), 325th IN, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, Platoon Leader, Asst. S-3 and S-2 with the 2/8th 1st Cavalry Division in the Republic of Vietnam, and completed his Active Duty as an instructor in the Ranger Department of the Infantry School at Fort Benning.
Major General Comstock was mobilized in July of 1996 in support of Operation Joint Endeavor. During the mobilization, Major General Comstock served as the Commander 3d COSCOM, Deputy Commander and Commander Task Force 21.
Major General Comstock's awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with "V" device and two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with "V" device and five oak leaf clusters, Air Medal-Second Award, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, Special Forces Tab, and numerous service medals.
In his civilian career Major General Comstock has over 35 years of experience in the insurance and investment profession. His current position is; Managing Director Public with Institutional Liability Management partners located in San Diego, California.
In 2009 Major General Comstock was inducted into the Michigan State University Army ROTC Hall of Fame
Major General Comstock and his wife Cheryl reside in San Diego California.
