USS Barb SS-220
The USS Barb (SS-220) was named after the barbus, a genus of fish. A Gato-class U.S. Navy submarine, the Barb was laid down by the General Dynamics/ Electric Boat Company and launched in the spring of 1942. She had an extremely admirable record in World War II, receiving:
eight battle stars
a Navy Unit Commendation, and
the Presidential Unit Citation
Seventeen Enemy Vessels Sunk by the USS Barb
The Barb is credited with sinking 17 enemy vessels over her 12 patrols, which were evenly split between the Atlantic and Pacific fleets.
For example, in early 1945, the Barb entered Namkwan Harbor on China’s coast, where a convoy of about 30 enemy ships was anchored. In shallow waters, the Barb launched her torpedoes into the convoy and then took an hour-long run at high speed on the surface through heavily mined, uncharted waters. The Barb’s commander during this patrol, Cmdr. Eugene Fluckey, was awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of this patrol.
A GUPPY Sub, Then Loaned to Italy
In 1945, the Barb underwent an overhaul and alterations. She was later converted to a GUPPY (Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program) submarine at Key West, Florida. The Barb was finally decommissioned and loaned to Italy; in 1972 she was sold for scrap.
The USS Barb: Asbestos Risks
Submarines, by nature, have small, tightly enclosed spaces for crew to work, eat and sleep. The asbestos materials used in the construction of Navy submarines were a danger to the 80-man crew of the USS Barb. Exposure to asbestos fibers — especially over an extended period of time — can initiate several disease states in human beings, including:
lung cancer
cancer of other organs
mesothelioma
asbestosis
other respiratory problems
