Mesothelioma: 12 Essential Facts

Moore Dry Dock Company

The Moore Dry Dock Company was first established in 1909 in San Francisco and was known for mass-producing ships used at various establishments throughout the country. Most of the production that occurred at the Moore Dry Dock Company happened during World War I.

Moore Dry Dock Company was recognized for its ability to mass-produce the necessary vessels used during the time of the war. The dry dock was initially developed as a repair industry for ships, and during World War II, Moore Dry Dock was used to build over a 100 vessels that were used in marine activities. The company eventually closed in 1961.

Workers at the Dry Dock

Since the Moore Dry Dock Company was involved in ship building early on in history, researchers believe that workers were routinely exposed to hazardous asbestos fibers.

During the war, asbestos was used in many products, particularly in the shipbuilding industry, due to its heat-resistance and strength. However, most workers and employers were unaware of the risks associated with asbestos and didn't know the harmful effect it could have after years of exposure.

As a result of the workers' constant exposure to asbestos, some may have developed health complications in their lungs or been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Former Employees Diagnosed with Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos and typically doesn't show symptoms until 20-50 years after the exposure.

Because thousands of former shipyard workers have been exposed to asbestos, many are now being diagnosed with this devastating disease and many more are expected to be diagnosed in the years to come.
