Todd Shipyard, San Pedro
The Todd Shipyard in San Pedro, Los Angeles was also once known as the Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Corporation. The Todd Corporation was a massive shipbuilding concern that had several locations, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. The San Pedro shipyard was closed in 1989 after many decades of service, and the site is now part of the Port of Los Angeles West Basin Container Terminal. Berth 100 is where the San Pedro shipyard once sat.
Building and Repairing Ships
Ships such as frigates and destroyers were built at the Todd Shipyard in San Pedro. Both commercial and military vessels were constructed. The men and women who worked at the shipyard constructing and repairing ships may have been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos, the mineral that was used extensively as a fireproofing material aboard most sea-going vessels.
The years that shipyard employees spent building and fixing vessels with asbestos-containing components at the San Pedro yard may have been the cause of serious disease. Asbestos is a human carcinogen, and the inhalation of asbestos dust was a common occurrence at shipyards, including the Todd Shipyard at San Pedro.
Asbestos Ship Parts
Asbestos was used in hundreds of ship parts, including pipe and electrical insulation, pumps and boilers, turbines, gaskets, and cement. Shipyard workers' often-daily exposure to asbestos fibers, sometimes for years at a time, may have been the basis of asbestos-caused diseases that take decades to manifest.
asbestosis, lung cancer (both small-cell and non-small-cell lung cancer), and mesothelioma have all occurred among shipyard workers at rates that are higher than those among the general population.
Asbestos Disease among San Pedro Shipyard Workers
Individuals who have been stricken with an asbestos-caused illness following their work at a shipyard may have a legal right to compensation for their losses. Contact us now for more information.
